About Taxes on Nicobolt Orders
Nicobolt complies with legal requirements to charge applicable tobacco/nicotine taxes and sales taxes on online orders. Where these taxes apply, your order total at checkout will be updated to include them. Note that shipping charges are also generally subject to sales tax in most states.
How Are Taxes on Nicotine Products Calculated?
State Excise Tax (SET), often referred to as the “tobacco/nicotine tax,” is applied in accordance with state and local laws. While all states impose SET on tobacco products, most do not apply this tax to Tobacco-Free products.
The calculation of SET depends on the product category (Tobacco or Tobacco-Free) and state regulations, and is determined in one of the following ways:
- Percentage of Wholesale Price: Based on Nicobolt’s cost of the product.
- Percentage of Selling Price: Based on the price paid by the customer.
- Weight-Based: Calculated per unit weight of the product.
How Is Sales Tax on an Order Calculated?
Sales tax is calculated in accordance with state and local laws. Current sales tax rates for each state can be found here: State Sales Tax Rates – Sales Tax Institute.
Example Calculation (California):
- SET Rate (CA): 56.93%
- Sales Tax Rate (CA): 7.25%
- Wholesale Cost per Can: $3.00
- Selling Price to Customer: $3.99
Step 1: Calculate SET per can:
$3.00 x 0.5693 = $1.71
Step 2: Calculate sales tax per can:
($3.99 + $1.71) x 0.0725 = $0.41
Total taxes per can = $1.71 (SET) + $0.41 (Sales Tax)
